Formula: Watts = (kWh / Hours) x 1,000

To convert kilowatt-hours to watts, divide the energy in kWh by the number of hours, then multiply by 1,000. For example, if an appliance uses 2 kWh in 4 hours, it draws (2 / 4) x 1,000 = 500W. This reverse calculation is useful when you know how much energy something consumed (from a smart plug or your bill) and want to determine its power rating.

Understanding the kWh to Watts Conversion

Converting kWh back to watts is particularly useful when you have energy consumption data but need to determine the actual power draw of a device. This situation arises often with smart plugs and energy monitors that report cumulative kWh consumption, or when reading appliance energy labels that state annual consumption in kWh.

For instance, if your refrigerator's energy label states it consumes 250 kWh per year, you can calculate its average power draw: 250 kWh divided by 8,760 hours (one year) equals 0.0285 kW, or about 29W on average. Note that actual power draw fluctuates as the compressor cycles on and off, but this average helps you compare different models.

This conversion is also valuable for sizing solar panel systems or battery storage. If you know your daily energy consumption in kWh and want to determine what continuous power output you need from a solar array, dividing by the expected peak sun hours gives you the required wattage. For example, if you need 10 kWh per day and get 5 peak sun hours, you need a 2,000W (2 kW) solar array.
